British Premier Welcomes New UK, EU Deal
Downing Street described the development as “a new chapter” in the UK-EU relationship.
The agreement, which comes after half a year of diplomatic talks, is the third significant international accord secured by the UK in the past three weeks.
It follows earlier treaties reached with the United States and India, as highlighted in an official government release.
Authorities believe the new measures will help drive economic expansion, protect employment in the UK, and deliver practical advantages for everyday citizens.
A key element of the deal is a revised sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) system designed to simplify the trade of food and beverages.
By lifting certain standard inspections on animal and plant-based goods, the deal is expected to smooth the movement of products—particularly across the sensitive trade corridor between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which has been a contentious issue since Brexit.
“This agreement will have no time limit, giving vital certainty to businesses,” the government affirmed in a public statement.
Government ministers argue that these steps could lead to lower grocery costs and broader product selection in supermarkets.
Despite the departure from the EU, the bloc continues to be the UK's primary trade ally.
Since Brexit, British exports to the EU have declined by 21 percent, while imports have dropped by 7 percent, based on official data.
