EU Criticizes Israeli Gunfire Near Diplomats

(MENAFN) Gunfire reportedly coming from Israeli forces near foreign diplomats at the entrance of a refugee camp in the West Bank on Wednesday has sparked widespread condemnation, with European officials labeling the act as “unacceptable.”

The incident has drawn concern from multiple nations, urging accountability and transparency from Israel.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, during a summit between the EU and the African Union, stressed that “any threats on diplomats’ lives are unacceptable.”

She called on Israeli authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot expressed his “shock” via X, formerly known as Twitter, demanding a “convincing” explanation from the Israeli government.

Similarly, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani urged Israel to clarify the events without delay. He stated that the secretary general of Italy’s Foreign Ministry had been directed to summon the Israeli ambassador in Rome for an “official clarification” regarding the confrontation.

France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot also took to X to condemn the gunfire, explaining that an Israeli military unit had fired during a diplomatic visit to Jenin, in which French officials were participating.

He asserted that the Israeli ambassador would be called in to provide an explanation and expressed solidarity with the French staff operating under “challenging conditions.”

Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Defense, Simon Harris, voiced deep dismay over reports that Israeli Defense Forces opened fire close to a diplomatic group visiting Jenin, which included two Irish representatives stationed in Ramallah.

“I am shocked and appalled,” he declared, adding that although no injuries occurred, the incident was “completely unacceptable” and deserving of unequivocal condemnation.
